While it bears the American “Waltham” name on the dial, this timepiece is actually a historic cross-branded collaboration manufactured by Blancpain. During the 1950s and 1960s, stringent U.S. import tariffs and marketing restrictions prompted prestigious Swiss manufactures to partner with domestic American brands. Blancpain distributed their famous Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe tool watch through Waltham to enter the lucrative American market.
This exact dial layout with baton lums, handset, and slim case profile are identical to the legendary Swiss version, making this particular reference (often nicknamed the “Baby Blancpain” or “Poor Man’s Blancpain”) a holy grail for vintage dive watch enthusiasts and watch investors.
